Everything from how the character moves to the environment details such as dripping water or crumbling skeletons. While its character and environment designs stand out, the details and animation are what puts it over the top.

Each trial is like a puzzle - figure out the optimal way to beat it - then figure out how to pull it off. It’s like break-the-targets in Smash Bros. Perhaps the most challenging mode in TowerFall is trials mode. Even the simplest of enemies can be a huge obstacle with so much going on at once. Waves and enemy movement are not random, they have been carefully designed to provide a varied and challenging experience. There’s one level for every tower with normal and hardcore difficulties, which I would rename to hardcore and insane. Worth mentioning is that the Dark World expansion also has its own campaign In quest mode you take on waves of enemies with a friend or by yourself. It’s got two difficulties and a challenging achievement or three. It’s a campaign mode where you fight waves of monsters across each of the different themed stages. The main one is called co-op mode, which is bizarrely mislabeled as it can be played and enjoyed equally as well alone. It does have a couple of modes for co-operative or solo play, which I find very enjoyable, but they’re certainly not very fleshed-out features. As good as the game is, it leaves the main feature with a limited audience, out of reach for many who would probably love it. Northend Tower DefenseĪnd the enjoyability may be significantly impacted by the relative skill level of you and the people you play with. The versus mode is entirely reliant on having friends in your local vicinity to play with you’re out of commision for the rest of the round. It’s fast-paced, intense bow-and-arrow goodness - under the right conditions. There are a buttload of game modifiers available to make the games more interesting/silly/frantic/competitive, whatever your desires fancy. A feature I really like is that you have a limited amount of arrows which need to be picked up again after firing, and they’re open for grabs by anyone. Each arena encompasses a single screen that wraps around from left to right and top to bottom, which can be utilized to attack from unanticipated angles. With tight controls and mechanics that are both straightforward and dizzying. Towerfall Ascension is first and foremost an incredibly solid 2-4 player versus arena game You may want to look up a guide if you wish to find them all.
